Ever since I first watched my favorite movie Pretty Woman with the legendary Julia Roberts, I had “attend a polo match” on my bucket list. So this year, I absolutely had to attend the The Ninth Annual Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic at the scenic Liberty State Park in New Jersey. Throughout the day, I saw thousands of fancy fits, non stop champagne popping, picnicking and of course a competitive polo game between Black Watch and Veuve Clicquot. To a “bourgeois” girl who loves a fancy picnic, horses and entertainment, the Polo Classic was everything to me.
So let me give you some tips on preparing for this event. The first thing you’ll need is a fancy fit, meaning you need to dress in your Sunday’s best. For ladies, a light dress, a sun hat and/or sunglasses and comfortable shoes are a must. (The walk from the ferry to the game grounds is very long and hot and when you’re carrying all of your necessities, you want to be as comfortable as possible.) For guys, I suggest a hat, and/or sunglasses, a linen jacket and comfortable shoes. (Most likely you’ll be carrying all of those necessities I just mentioned for your girl.) Now what necessities am I referring to you ask? For one you need a blanket, (or a chair if you’re extremely bourgeois) snacks, food, (if you don’t want to purchase food on the grounds) an umbrella and a great attitude.
Now that you’re completely prepared for the event. It’s time to have fun. The polo match of course is the big attraction. I watched as Nacho Figueras and the Black Watch team by Ralph Lauren beat the Veuve Clicquot polo club but my favorite part was the well known activity called “the stomping of the divots.” This is what I remember specifically from Pretty Woman. It is the time when all spectators are invited to the field during halftime to replace the mounds of earth that were torn up by the horses hooves and to socialize with each other. In 2016 it’s more like the best opportunity to turn up, take selfies and snapchat videos.
I’ve added Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic to my list of annual events that I will be attending. Fortunately for you, even though you may not have attended the polo classic in New York/New Jersey, this event takes place in Los Angeles, California on October 15, 2016 at the Will Rogers State Historic Park. Until then, cheers to you. I’m only toasting with Veuve Clicquot of course!
